  • LIVES AND TIMES OF THE 346
Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge locomotive #346 has enjoyed many lives. Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1881, it operated throughout Colorado for nearly 70 years, surviving wrecks, rebuilding, and renumbering. Colorado Railroad Museum founder Robert W. Richardson saved it from the scrapper's torch for a new life delighting museum visitors. This survivor of more than a century is viewed in historic photos and plenty of current action, including the seldom-seen process of "firing up". Proceeds from the sale of this video help provide for the continued maintenance of the #346 and other museum exhibits.

Here we see the Cumbres & Toltec's Rotary OY at work in 1997 as it and three 2-8-2 steam locomotive assault 10,015-foot Cumbres Pass. Action from locations accessed by snowmobile, on board a special photography train, and the cab of one of the locomotives. After 3 days of fantastic plowing, everything comes to a stop, as there is a huge boulder sitting squarely on the tracks.

  • ROTARY ON THE RIO GRANDE NARROW GAUGE
