UINTAH RAILWAY: The Gilsonite Route
By Henry E. Bender Jr. One of the last narrow gauge lines built in to Rockies.
The line was built almost exclusively to carry the unusual mineral called
gilsonite, the glossy black asphaltum found nowhere else in the world. The
unusual task was made the more difficult by the fantastic grade climbing
Baxter Pass, five miles of unremitting 7.5 percent grade with many ultra-sharp
curves, for which the route became most famous. The Uintah had specially
built equipment, precursors of the Mallets, which makes this story extremely
interesting.
290 black and white photos plus maps and rosters, 240 pages, hardcover.
$44.95

UINTAH RAILWAY PICTORIAL: Volume I - Mack
to Atchee
By Rodger Polley. The picture story of the Uintah Railway begins at Mack,
Colorado, as this narrow gauge line was constructing a hotel, office building
and water tank during 1906. The arrival of new locomotives is illustrated,
including numerous pictures of famous articulated engines Nos. 50 and 51.
Various flatcars and gondolas, as well as cabooses, appear in service at
this time. Gilsonite ore was the Uintah Railway's primary reason for existing.
The route across the unrelenting desert to the coal-mine facilities at Carbonera
are approached mile-by-mile - including cars being loaded at the coal tipple.
Also included are train wrecks, graphically portrayed with historic photographs.
320 pages, 414 historic black and white views, 7 full color pictures, hardcover.

By Maury Klein. The history of the railroad that connected the coasts
and unified the United States. The Union Pacific Railroad is renowned as
America's first transcontinental railroad and is one of the strongest companies
in the railroad industry today. This book details the feat of engineering
and human strength that conquered the terrain of the desert and mountains
and also the colorful wheelings and dealings that were waged in executive
boardrooms in New York and Boston and in the chambers of Congress as dreamers
and scoundrels, politicians and patriots forged a pioneering enterprise in
transportation. Reprint.

UNION PACIFIC: Volume
II - 1894-1969
By Maury Klein. The saga continues as the Union Pacific lays the groundwork
for modern industry in America. The second volume begins after the financial
panic of 1893, one of the worst depressions Americans had yet experienced,
which pushed the railroad into bankruptcy. This book examines the complex
challenges faced by the Union Pacific in the new century - the expanding
role of government and its restrictive regulations, the growth of labor unions,
the devastating effects of two world wars, and the growing competition from
new modes of transportation. Reprint.
672 pages, 114 halftones, 15 line art, softbound.

UNION PACIFIC: Saving a Big Boy and Other Railroad
Stories
By Bess Arnold. This book is an effort to preserve some of the oral history
of former Union Pacific Railroad employees in Wyoming who experienced the
era of both World War II and steam-powered locomotives. In this sequel to
her earlier and well-received book about UP employees as told in their own
words, the author has expanded on the subject to include the accounts of
women who were hired to work for Union Pacific at a time when railroading
was otherwise viewed as being "a man's world". Included here are stories
of shop employees, track workers, train dispatchers and locomotive engineers.

UNION PACIFIC STEAM
SURVIVORS
By Lloyd E. Stagner with Bob Yarger. During the 1950s, as American railroads
were making the transition from steam to diesel power, Union Pacific's policy
of good relations with its on-line communities was instrumental in the donation
of many retired steam locomotives. Museums, some of them off-line, were also
recipients. These "steam survivors", while in some instances limited to only
one or two extant examples of certain types, are well diversified. They range
in size from small switch engines to that of the world's largest steam
locomotives - the Big Boys. This book examines the status of 52 still-extant
Union Pacific steam locomotives.
48 pages, black and white photos, softbound. $19.95

UP CLEAR CREEK ON THE
NARROW GAUGE: Modeling the Colorado & Southern
By Harry W. Brunk. This is a collection of 54 articles by the same title
that originally appearned in the bi-monthly magazine Narrow Gauge and
Shortline Gazette. It is the story of the author's HOn3 scale model railroad.
He based his Union Central and Northern layout on the Clear Creek District
of the 3-foot gauge Colorado & Southern Railroad that ran from Golden,
Colorado to just beyond Silver Plume. Although this book tells the story
of the author's layout, it is not a 'how-to-do-it' book; the history of the
area is discussed and reflected in the accurate modeling of not only the
railroad and its equipment, but also of the houses, churches, mines, and
businesses along the line.
