D&RGW 346 2-8-0 Baldwin 7/1881
Originally built as Denver & Rio Grande No. 406, and named
Cumbres, this 2-8-0 was delivered in July of 1881. It had a diamond
stack at the time, and it was purchased for $9,538. It was among the heaviest
pieces of motive power at the time, weighing in at 68,000 pounds. In actual
practice, the engine was capable of pulling 55 tons up the seven percent
grade of the Calumet branch of the D&RG. The D&RG became the Denver
& Rio Grande Western in 1921. In July of 1924, No. 406 entered the Rio
Grande Southern roundhouse in Ridgway, and emerged the following day as No.
346. This was done as part of a renumbering project of the D&RGW.
The complete story of this engine has recorded in Locomotive 346: Rebirth
for the 21st Century. This softbound volume is available in the Colorado
